By blending art and gaming into an interactive experience, the exhibits illustrate the potential of AI whilst encouraging critical conversation about its use.

An ambitious campus for the ethical use of AI

The Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence (IPAI) is an ambitious international campus, dedicated to promoting the ethical and sustainable use of artificial intelligence. In development on a 23-hectare site in Heilbronn, the campus is scheduled to open in 2025. In anticipation of its opening, the IPAI Living Room, a 1,000 m2 visitor center, has already been established. This center provides an informal setting where visitors can learn about AI and the IPAI's initiative. MAST, on behalf of Experimenta, has developed two interactive exhibits for the building’s education space.

Gamebox: digital games with physical activation

One of the exhibits, the Gamebox, features a physical interface with a top-lit surface on which visitors place one of two semi-transparent Gamecubes. Depending on the choice of cube, the display starts the game ‘Code-breaker’ (Mastermind) or ‘Connect 4’. Changing the orientation of the cube allows visitors to switch between play mode and informative mode.

Room Styler: turning 3D-objects into digital art

The Room Styler exhibit consists of two parts: a digital screen on the wall that mimics a painting, and a table with 3D objects on top and a display at the front. Visitors at the table arrange the set of 3D objects, setting up a still life scene which they then (digitally) photograph using the display. AI algorithms then help to transform the photograph into a unique art piece using style preferences chosen by the visitor. The artwork is then displayed on the digital screen on the wall, creating the appearance of a museum gallery. Visitors are encouraged to sign the creation as solo artists, raising intriguing questions about authorship and whether the AI and its underlying sources should also be credited as co-authors.
